Liver Fibrosis & Stiffness Assessment

A patient-friendly liver stiffness scan using transient elastography.

A clearer view of liver health

This non-invasive assessment measures liver stiffness, which can help estimate the risk of liver fibrosis or scarring. It is useful for fatty liver, abnormal liver blood tests and monitoring known liver conditions.

The clinical term is transient elastography. Many patients search for this type of assessment as a FibroScan-style liver test; FibroScan® is a proprietary brand.

Who it may help

People with fatty liver/MASLD, abnormal liver function tests, alcohol-related risk, viral hepatitis, diabetes, obesity or metabolic risk factors.

What happens

The scan is quick and painless. A probe is placed against the skin and measurements are taken to estimate liver stiffness.

How results are used

Results are interpreted alongside blood tests, imaging, history and consultant review where required.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer FibroScan?

Many patients use “FibroScan” to describe a liver stiffness scan. FibroScan® is a proprietary Echosens brand. Harmony offers liver stiffness assessment using transient elastography.

Is this the same as a liver blood test?

No. Blood tests show biochemical patterns; transient elastography estimates liver stiffness. The two are often complementary.

Can this diagnose cirrhosis by itself?

It contributes useful information, but diagnosis and monitoring should consider the full clinical picture.
