Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, is a highly specialised procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreas.
ERCP can be used to
- Diagnose and remove stones from the bile duct
- Relieve bile duct or pancreatic duct blockages
- Insert stents to maintain drainage
- Take tissue samples for laboratory testing
- Investigate jaundice or abnormal scans
- Assess and manage chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic masses
Before ERCP
A clinic consultation is required to confirm the indication, review risks and plan the procedure safely. You will be asked to fast and may need to adjust blood-thinning medication.
During the procedure
A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the first part of the small bowel. X-ray guidance and contrast dye are used to identify narrowing, stones or blockages. Treatment can sometimes be performed during the same session.
Aftercare and results
You are monitored after the procedure. Most patients go home the same day, with an escort. Written aftercare instructions and follow-up arrangements are provided.
Risks
Risks include pancreatitis, bleeding, infection, perforation and reaction to contrast or sedative. These are discussed in detail before ERCP.
