You might have been told that you need a test called ERCP? You might be thinking:Private ERCP Milton Keynes

● What does it mean?

Will it hurt?
Is it something serious?
Why do I need it?

At Harmony Digestive and Liver Wellness Centre, we meet many patients with these questions. This blog will help you understand what ERCP is, how it works, and why it’s important for people with bile duct stone treatment, pancreatic issues, or unexplained symptoms like pain or jaundice.

We are proud to offer private ERCP in Milton Keynes—we’re the only centre outside London providing this service with experienced consultant gastroenterologist.

What Is ERCP?

ERCP stands for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. Yes, it’s a big name! But let’s break it down into small steps.
ERCP is a test that helps doctors look at two parts of your body:

The bile ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine.
The pancreatic ducts, which carry digestive juices from the pancreas.

Sometimes, these tubes get blocked, narrowed, or infected. A person might have:

Gallstones stuck in the bile duct
Pancreatic stones
Inflammation (like pancreatitis)
A possible tumour or cancer
Yellow skin or eyes (a symptom called jaundice)

With ERCP, doctors can see inside the ducts, take biopsies (tiny samples), or even fix problems—like removing a stone or placing a small plastic tube (called a stent) to keep things open.

What Happens Before the Test?

If your doctor thinks you need an ERCP, they will explain why and you will need to visit the clinic. Before the test:

You don’t eat or drink for about 6 hours before the procedure.
You tell your doctor about any medications, allergies, or if you are on blood thinners or have diabetes.
If you are taking blood thinners, you may need to pause them safely—your doctor will guide you.
You might also get a blood test to check how well your liver is working.

Our team will answer any questions that you have before your appointment.

What Happens During the ERCP?

The ERCP is done by a consultant gastroenterologist. You will be given a sedative to make you feel sleepy and relaxed. You won’t be fully asleep but you’ll be calm and comfortable.

Here’s what the doctor does during the process:

1. Passes a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope through your mouth, down your throat, into your stomach and small intestine.
2. Finds the small opening where the bile and pancreatic ducts meet.
3. Passes a tiny tube into the ducts.
4. Injects a special dye and takes X-rays to see what’s going on.
5. If needed, removes a stone, places a stent, or takes a small sample (biopsy) for testing.

The whole procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

Will It Hurt?

During the ERCP most people feel relaxed due to sedation and don’t feel any pain. You may feel a bit bloated after the procedure as air is used during the test. Some people can feel sleepy or groggy later on.

Very rarely, complications can happen like:

Mild sore throat
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
Infection or bleeding

These are uncommon, and our team keeps a check to keep you safe.

What Happens After the Test?

After your ERCP:

You’ll rest in a recovery area for a few hours.
You can go home the same day unless your doctor says otherwise.
You can’t drive after sedation, so bring someone with you.
You may eat and drink once you feel ready, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

If a biopsy was taken, the results usually come back within a few days. Your doctor will explain everything clearly.
